Michael was born in Atlanta, GA and received his BFA in Photography from Georgia State University. In 1974 he was a founding member of Nexus Photography Gallery. He received his Masters of Fine Art in 1976 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, in Photography with a minor in Art History. While in graduate school, he attended the Chicago Graphic Arts Project in the evenings to learn offset printing. Upon receiving his MFA, he returned to Atlanta he became the founder and first director of Nexus Press in 1977. Nexus Press went on to be one of the few artists’ presses in the country to use the offset printing medium as an artistic tool. Nexus Press books are now housed in museums and private collections throughout the world. Michael’s photographs and artists’ books are in private and museum collections. His personal book and photographic archive is housed at Emory University’s Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library.

Michael continues photographing, exhibiting his work, teaches workshops, both private and public and is an instructor at the Portfolio Center/Miami Ad School in Atlanta. He teaches bookmaking, packaging, paper engineering and typography.
